HONORS AWARDED BY THE EXPLORERS CLUB

Every year, the Club recognizes men and women who have distinguished themselves in the field of exploration, as well as those who have provided outstanding support to the Club and its mission.

The Explorers Club Medal
The highest honor that can be bestowed by the Club, is awarded to a member or nonmember for extraordinary contributions directly in the field of exploration, scientific research, or to the welfare of humanity.

The Sweeney Medal
Named for former Club president Edward C. Sweeney, Jr. to commemorate his dedication to the Club and his contributions to science, this medal is awarded annually to a member in recognition of his or her outstanding contributions to the welfare and objectives of The Explorers Club.

The Lowell Thomas Award
Named for the noted journalist, broadcaster, and Club member Lowell Thomas, this award, which was first granted in 1980 on the occasion of the Club's 75th anniversary, is presented annually to several outstanding explorers.

The Explorers Club Communication Award
This award is granted in recognition of outstanding individual efforts to promote and communicate conservation awareness.

The Quadrennial Awards

The Finn Ronne Memorial Award
Granted to an individual noted for accomplishments in polar field research that best typify the spirit of explorer Finn Ronne.

The Aldrin Quadrennial Space Exploration Award
Granted to an individual noted for accomplishments in exploration of outer space that best typify the spirit of explorer Buzz Aldrin.

The Tenzing Norgay Award
Granted to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional mountaineering in the spirit of explorer Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, one of the two first men to summit Mount Everest in 1953.

The William Beebe Award
Granted to an individual noted for accomplishments in oceanography and ocean science in the spirit of explorer William Beebe.

Honorary Membership
Granted to individuals who have rendered lifelong services in the field of exploration.

Citation of Merit
Granted to an individual or group in recognition of an outstanding feat of exploration or service to the Club.

Patron of Exploration
This designation is granted to a member or nonmember who has made qualifying financial donations in support of the Club and it's objectives.
