The dinner was attended by some 1300 explorers and guests and was a great success. Thanks for your support! The year 2005 ushers in the second century of our esteemed organization, and as is our tradition we celebrated the year in exploration at our famed Explorers Club Annual Dinner (ECAD).

President Richard C. Wiese was Master of Ceremonies. Honorary President Jim Fowler was on hand along with his ambassadors of the animal world.

The theme of the 2005 Annual Dinner was "Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century", and distinguished speakers from around the world offered their insights into the exciting challenges ahead.

Speakers

James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, Nobel laureate, and former director of the N.I.H. National Center for Human Genome Research.

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland.

Col. Matthew Bogdanos, classics expert and New York Assistant District Attorney who led the recovery of looted antiquities in Baghdad.

Honors to be Awarded
Several explorers were awarded special honors from the Club during the Annual Dinner.

The Explorers Medal, the Club's highest honor, was awarded to Burt Rutan and pilots Michael Melvill and Brian Binnie of the high-altitude aircraft SpaceShipOne, winner of the X-Prize for space aviation. Binnie and X-Prize founder Peter Diamandis were on hand to accept the award.

Max Gallimore received the Sweeney Medal for his outstanding contributions to the welfare of the Club.

Theodore Siouris received the Citation of Merit for exceptional service to the Club through his leadership of the Legacy Society and the Explorers Club Merchandise program.

Peter Athans received the Tenzing Norgay Award for exceptional mountaineering in the spirit of famed sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

The Boy Scouts of America received the 2005 Corporate Award for Support of Exploration, presented by Club member Bill Koch.

Flags Returned from the Field

Peter Diamandis, founder of the X-Prize for space aviation, carried Explorers Club Flag 68 on behalf of Burt Rutan and the crew of SpaceShipOne during their prize winning flight. With the mission accomplished, Diamandis returned the flag to Club officers at the Annual Dinner.

Steve Fossett piloted the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, designed by Scaled Composites, to a historic first: a nonstop solo aircraft flight around the globe without refueling. Having completed the sixty-seven hour mission on March 3, 2005, he returned the Explorers Club flag at the Annual Dinner.

New Cooperative Venture

Astronauts Scott Carpenter and Dr. Kathryn Sullivan were on hand to make a special announcement about an exciting new cooperative venture between The Explorers Club and Space Adventures.

Rolex Raffle: Perpetual Oyster Explorer II Watch
Our Corporate Benefactor of Exploration, Rolex Watch USA, Inc., once again generously donated the Explorer II stainless steel watch with a special 24-hour bezel and Oyster lock bracelet for our raffle.

Live Auction
Sotheby’s again conducted our Live Auction. This year, once again, we gathered some very exciting trips, including: a fantasy vacation to Buenos Aires and Patagonia, an all-inclusive safari to South Africa and Botswana, a trip to Iceland including a private tour of the Presidential residence, and a luxury cruise vacation along the breathtaking coast of Norway.

Silent Auction
Enjoy a review of the Silent Auction—a very popular feature of our Annual Dinner. Made possible through the generosity of our members, who donate beautiful artifacts, trips and adventures, and explorer-ready gear, the Silent Auction was conducted in the East Foyer.

Exotics and Exhibits
As always at our famed Annual Dinner, the evening began with an hour and a half of cocktails, during which time we served our famous exotic hors d’oeuvres: tarantula, alligator, crickets, scorpions, elk, kangaroo and many other unique, non-endangered edible delights. During cocktails, guests visited the various exhibits of products and organizations related to exploration.
