By Barbara Cushman Rowell
Review by Club member Russ Kinne When a world-class climber and photographer and an articulate, highly-talented and writer team up, you can expect something pretty impressive to result. Barbara Rowell piloted her Cessna 206 from California to Chile and Argentina, at times traveling with her husband and brother. Her narrative of that journey, Flying South, is leagues out of the ordinary. The book is illustrated with photographs by both Barbara and her husband, Galen Rowell. Her journey began in California. Once they arrived in southern Chile, Galen took off to climb, and Barbara was very nearly killed in a river-rafting accident, suffering lost teeth and broken maxillary bones. She did not give up but continued her journey across the Andes into Buenos Aires, and on to Brazil. After a series of near disasters she arrived in the Caribbean for some much needed medical treatment before returning to California. Tragically both Barbara and Galen were later killed in a plane crash near their home in Bishop, California. She was not flying at the time. This hauntingly beautiful book is well worth reading.
