By Barry Cunliffe
Review by Club member Milbry Polk Noted Oxford professor and archeohistorian Barry Cunliffe's latest addition to his popular books on European prehistory is Facing the Ocean. It is a marvelously detailed and beautifully illustrated book. Cunliffe says that throughout his career he has been fascinated by the effects living by or near the sea has had on the cultural evolution of Europe. Living by the sea gave peoples throughout the sweep of history he covers (8000 BC to AD 1500) not only access to a rich source of food, but easier ability to trade over great distances. In fact he argues people living along the length of the Atlantic coast of Europe were actually in closer touch to distant neighbors than they were to their own land locked countrymen. This effectively unified the coastal peoples in ways that went beyond nationality creating a unique Atlantic culture. In addition all these peoples were intimately affected by the rhythm of the oceans, the migrations of fish, the storms, the currents. These natural forces molded a unique cultural personality that exists to this day. The Atlantic peoples are an outward facing culture, leaders in exploration and innovation. This is a great read and will fire your imagination.
