Some Like It Cold
Some Like It Cold

By Neville Shulman
Explorers Club Imprint
The Lyons Press
ISBN 159228146X

Review by Club member Lindley Kirksey
Neville Shulman's two expeditions had nothing to do with the North-West Passage or Emperor penguins and everything to do with personal achievement, art, and charity. His expedition to the North Pole was with patrons of the Tate Gallery, London, following the route taken by Andy Goldsworthy who made ice art all the way. The expedition to the South Pole was a fundraiser for the Red Cross.

The strength and substance of this book lie in the fine writing, the enthusiasm that never wanes, and in the rich history of Polar expedition that provides the background for Neville's experiences. With thoughtful insight he references the early explorers such as Scott, Byrd, Amundsen, Peary, and later Robert Swan and Ranulph Fiennes. Neville also gives vivid, detailed accounts of the founding of the Inuit nation and the animals of both poles. His chapter "I Am the Walrus" should not be missed.

Should one want to go to either pole, this book is as close to a manual for planning the independent expedition as you will find. Neville is candid and senses his place in the scheme of things. It is still the weather report and the pilot's decision that determine if one will reach the pole. His appreciation for Zen philosophy comes out when it is time to persevere, as no trip to the pole is without hardship. And some like it cold.

Neville Shulman MI'93 is a member of the British chapter of The Explorers Club, and is the first author to have a book printed under the regular Explorers Club imprint.
