CONSERVATION
Our responsibility as explorers begins, not ends, with discovery. Building on the overall mission of The Explorers Club to "act as the wellspring of the impulse to explore and serve as a stimulus to the enduring spirit of exploration in human life", the Committee on Conservation and Environment stands for responsible exploration which focuses on preservation and harmony with our environment on land and sea, and in air and space. As we enter the new millennium, The Explorers Club is well positioned to lead the way in replacing the old paradigm of "conquest of nature" with a new paradigm of cooperation with nature. As explorers, we engage in intimate contact with nature, seeking to uncover its secrets and learning to cooperate with its forces to accomplish the goals of our expeditionary efforts. As a result, we have a unique personal knowledge of nature, and with this knowledge comes the responsibility to act in accordance with what we know. In the words of one of our great members, Teddy Roosevelt, "the nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value." To that end, the Committee on Conservation and Environment establishes the following goals:
