Greater Piedmont Chapter

The Greater Piedmont Chapter of The Explorers Club was founded in 1976 by Horace Byrne, Jim Jackson, and Dr. George Fulton. These founders are now deceased, and scholarships are given to three students each year in their honor.

The chapter holds monthly (except August) luncheon meetings with a speaker in Columbia, South Carolina. Attendance is usually between 25 and 35 persons. Throughout the year the chapter sponsors field trips, and every December a Christmas dinner is held at a member's home.

Officers of the chapter are elected for two year terms. Current officers are Nena Powell Rice FN'87, Chair ; Dr. John Safko FN'98, treasurer; and Ginny Newell FRN'02. Past presidents make up the Executive Committee: Dr. Steve Stancyk FN'91, Jim Welch MN'70, Dr. Bill Vartorella FN'91, Dr. Bruce Rippeteau FN'85, Alan Shoemaker FN'94, and Dr. Billy Moore FN'88.

Speakers at meetings during 2006 include:

  • Dr. Constance B. Schulz, USC professor of history—"A Fulbright Spring in Italy".
  • Van Kornegay, USC associate professor of journalism—"Hiking and Kayaking in Malawi".
  • Jay Bender, attorney—"A Trailblazing Motorcycle Trip from to Key West and Prudhoe Bay".
  • Jim Welch MN'70, past chapter president—"A Journey into Peru with National Geographic".
